We go nostalgic the moment we come across the name : Konark;
not b'coz, my career launch pad is- Konark Pipe & Synthetics, Bhubaneswar.
Not b'coz of the erotic sculptures at the Konark Temple !!
Simply b'coz we,  ( Me and Rekha)  met at the lawns of this beautiful temple in Konark, where in I think, the foundation for our eternal love blossomed. .. (Blush .. Blush..)

Konark Sun Temple is a 13th century Sun Temple (also known as the Black Pagoda), at Konark, in Orissa. It was constructed from oxidized and weathered ferruginous sandstone by King Narasimhadeva I (1238-1250 CE) of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty. The temple is an example of Orissan architecture of Ganga dynasty . The temple is one of the most renowned temples in India and is a World Heritage Site. It is one of the Seven Wonders of India (as per the poll collected by NDTV). Legend has it that the temple was constructed by Samba, the son of Lord Krishna. It is said that Samba was afflicted by leprosy, brought about by his father’s curse on him. After 12 years of penance, he was cured by Surya, the Sun God, in whose honour he built the magnificent Konark Sun Temple.

Konark Sun Temple
The name Konark is derived from the Sanskrit word Kona (meaning angle) and word Arka (meaning sun) in reference to the temple which was dedicated to the Sun god Surya

Nata Mandir
Located on the shoreline, now a little over 3 km from the sea, the temple takes the form of the chariot of Surya (Arka), the Sun God, and is heavily decorated with stone carving. The entire complex was designed in the form of the God's huge chariot drawn by seven spirited horses on twelve pairs of exquisitely decorated wheels at its base. The huge wheels carved at the base of the temple are one of the major attractions. The spokes of the wheels serve as sundials and the shadows cast by these can give the precise time of the day. The pyramidal roof soars over 30 m (98 ft) in height. The temple complex also contains erotic sculptures similar to the temple in Khajuraho.
The entrance is guarded by two giant lions, which are each shown crushing a war elephant. Each elephant in turn lies on top of a human body. The temple symbolizes the majestic stride of the Sun God. At the entrance of the temple is a Nata Mandir. This is where the temple dancers used to perform dances in homage to the Sun God. All around the temple, there are various floral and geometric patterns. The temple is now partly in ruins, and a collection of its sculptures is housed in the Sun Temple Museum, which is run by the Archaeological Survey of India. The poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote of Konark: "Here the language of stone surpasses the language of man."

Konark Sun Temple Chariot Wheel
The Sun Temple, built in the thirteenth century, was conceived as a gigantic chariot of the Sun God, with twelve pairs of exquisitely ornamented wheels pulled by seven pairs of horses. Majestic in conception, this temple is one of the most sublime monuments of India, famous as much for its imposing dimensions and faultless proportions as for the harmonious integration of architectural grandeur with plastic allegiance. Every inch of the temple is covered with sculpture of an unsurpassed beauty and grace, in tableaux and freestanding pieces ranging from the monumental to the miniature. The subject matter is fascinating. Thousands of images include deities, celestial and human musicians, dancers, lovers, and myriad scenes of courtly life, ranging from hunts and military battles to the pleasures of courtly relaxation. These are interspersed with birds, animals (close to two thousand charming and lively elephants march around the base of the main temple alone), mythological creatures, and a wealth of intricate botanical and geometrical decorative designs. The famous jewel-like quality of Orissan art is evident throughout, as is a very human perspective which makes the sculpture extremely accessible.

Konark Sun Temple at night
The temple is famous for its erotic sculptures, which can be found primarily on the second level of the porch structure. It will become immediately apparent upon viewing them that the frank nature of their content is combined with an overwhelming tenderness and lyrical movement. This same kindly and indulgent view of life extends to almost all the other sculptures at Konark, where the thousands of human, animal, and divine personages are shown engaged in the full range of the 'carnival of life' with an overwhelming sense of appealing realism. It is admittedly the best in Orissa. Its fine traceries and scrollwork, as well as the beautiful and natural cut of animal and human figures, give it a superiority over other temples.
The Sun temple belongs to the Kalinga school of Indian temple architecture. The Main Sanctum which (229 ft. high) was constructed along with the Audience Hall (128 ft. high) having elaborate external projections. The Main Sanctum which enshrined the presiding deity has fallen off. The Audience Hall survives in its entirety, but only small portions of the Dancing Hall (Nata Mandir) and the Dining Hall (Bhoga-Mandap) have survived the vagaries of time. The Temple compound measures 857 ft (261 m) by 540 ft (160 m). The alignment of the Sun Temple is on the East-West direction. The Temple is located in natural surroundings, abounding with casuarina plantations and other types of trees such as mahogany, rosewood, eel which grow on sandy soil.

Srinagar's Sparkling network of waterways have been serving the valley since time immemorial, influencing not just its distinct landscape, but also its unique way of life.
The Dal lake itself is a fascinating garden of floating lotuses, and it is here that the Hanjis, (Srinagar's Community of boat people) have leart to make a blooming business out of tourism.

Though Kashmir has a rich tradition of boat-building with vessels such as Bhats, demb and Shikaras, the most inspiring for tourists - the symbolic - The Houseboat - is actually a colonial legacy.

It is said that, M.T. Kennard designed the first house boat in 1888.

Today, house boats made of Cedar range from the basic to extremely luxurious, boasting of five-star comfort, with three or more rooms, complete with ornately carved furniture and exquisite Kashmiri carpets, western style bathrooms with bath-Tub, Hot water showers, satellite TV, Verandahs, sun-decks, and porches. Attached to the House-boats are the Kitchen boats where the owners cook and serve up delicacies. Each House boat comes with its particular Shikara or the small taxi-boat with its heart shaped oars.

One can sit in the balcony, Sun-deck, or in the Verandah and sip tea and watch life go floating by. You can see floating vegetable market on a Shikara, Ice-cream vendor, Light refreshments, jewellery, Photo-graphers with kashmiri dress in their deck and what not !! In all, approximately 2500 + House boats are located in Dal, Nagin and Jhelum water bodies.

We stayed in THE BOUSITE House Boat for one Night and in THE NEW LUCIFER House Boat- the second night.

Parents should be willing to lose their identity at the mention of the ward's name.

.......Little did I realise my parental prowess until my son started going to school. (Play School, le' me correct it).His admission to school added altogether a new dimension to my otherwise obscure persona. No more I was called Mr Joshi, or Pramod or was as to - that couple leave early and come back late, who live in the first floor flat over there.

To the children living in our Apartment I came to be known as Krithik's papa and their parent's also referred to me the same way. My social circle enlarged as parents of Krithik's friends came to drop them and pick them up on his birthday or when I dropped him at his friend's place on similar occasions. We met regularly at our Apartment children's play area or at parent teacher's meeting, annual day functions or at some other place. Casual acquaintances and exchange of pleasantries soon blossomed into friendship. I soon began to be identified as Krithik's Papa just as I was known as Bhatt Mama's son in my hometown.

The other day, when I called Miss Abhigna, Krithik's school teacher, over the phone, I introduced as usual, as to "Good Morning Ma'm, I am Joshi speaking," for which, she as if corrected, saying " Is it Krithik's Father speaking ?.. good morning Sir." I have made up my mind now-onwards in this circle I should better correct my name and be referred to as Krithik's Papa, and better be proud with that, which I am. !!.

Spent the day in Paris , exploring the city in detail, The Eiffel Tower, Opera, Paris du Nord, Central, lyfestyyle. I was just wondering : Life is played like an open drama on streets in Paris. This city has something unique, something attractive, Gaze and To be Gazed at type, Beautiful, adorable and charming. Though this is my second visit to Paris in the past one year, The city still offers something new everytime you venture out onto the streets.
Will continue… ( I think you must be bored enough now..if not pl. revert…!!!)

Mobile Mania:!!!

The mobile phone seems to have given birth to a new generation of humans hopping about with this little gadget permanently wedged between the right ear and the right hand. Or in some cases left ear to left hand..as the case may be.!!
One such specimen has been haunting the entrance to my house every morning and evening.

I have never seen him even once without that contraption attached to his ear, pacing furiously to and fro like one possessed. What prevents him from carrying on this performance in front of his own house is a mystery. Perhaps the idea behind this crazy act is that he wants the world to recognise him as a business tycoon trying to control his vast business empire with the aid of his mobile phone pasted to his ear.

He is by no means an exceptional case. Nowadays most people in this city, including even house-maids and auto-drivers, seem afflicted with this malady. Recently a maid-servant working for us was seen, suddenly whipping out a mobile phone from inside her blouse like a gun-fighter whipping out his revolver at the sight of an enemy. Thank god, she was only attending to a call, phone call, not nature’s call. Look at any bus-stop, cinema hall, railway station, airport or nearby pan-shop, people mostly young lads are busy talking on the mobile, smsing, smiling/ laughing to themselves, animated discussions, shouting their lungs out, disturbing others is in their blood.

You cannot throw a stone anywhere in this garden city of ours without hitting a mobilomaniac, as this disease seems to have reached epidemic proportions. Every street, every road, nowadays crawls with them pacing up and down as if their lives depended upon it. There seems to be in existence some unwritten law somewhere which prevents the mobile mob from standing still while conversing on their mobiles.

Worser, these mobile-holders cross the limit when they drive two-wheelers with this gadget attached to the ear, leaving the handle-bar to its own devices. Perhaps the ever-increasing number of road accidents everywhere can be attributed to this craze of conversing on the mobile while riding a two-wheeler. They are a threat to society, head bent onto the mobile and speaking loudly (guys) and speaking to themselves (gals), and are never bothered about what’s going on around on the road. Same case with the Car drivers.. They drive their cars with one hand while the other is busy trying the number or holding the gadget to the nearest ear!!.

I have a mobile phone. (Should I.!! ) But I haven’t found it necessary to walk to and fro at break-neck speed while using it. I feel quite comfortable using it while seated. And I don’t attend the call while on the drive.. If at all I need to .. then I stop the Car at a safe place switch of the ignition, then only I can take the call. and Perhaps that is why the present day mobile mob prefer to keep their distance from me.

For some people, missed calls have become the best means of communication.

This is the era of missed calls. “Sorry, wrong number” has been replaced by “I’ll give you a missed call on your cell phone”. People across India are giving each other millions of missed calls all the time. Earlier this month, mobile phone companies bemoaned that missed calls are hurting them, because missed calling uses their facilities but are entirely free. Operators do not get any revenue out of it.

That is, of course, the point. Missed calling is free and therefore my teenage niece likes to give me a missed call. Her pocket money stays intact while I hurriedly call her back to check out that nothing is seriously wrong. Our maid gives us many missed calls, and we call her back with even greater urgency, because a missed call is anyway better than a missing maid. Economists will soon discover that the phenomenon of missed calls results in redistribution of wealth – from me to my maid, or to my niece, uncle, mama, brother, friend, son / daughter, and so on, because we bear the cost that they would otherwise have borne. Missed calls are truly a great economic leveller.

But why should mobile phone companies feel so persecuted by missed calls? Is a missed call not always followed by a real call which earns revenue, as the receiver of missed calls telephones back? This sounds logical, but innovation has overtaken logic. I know of two friends who use only missed calls to convey messages both ways.

They use missed calls as a sort of Morse code – one missed call, a brief gap, followed by two missed calls is a code which denotes “can we have lunch together?” With the money they save through this unique mode of communication, the answer is always three quick missed calls, which means “Yes, of course.” or two missed calls which means: "Not today",.

End of the day, I hate missed calls; I dont give Missed Calls to any.

Flying the King Air- with the Prince

This weekend we had been to our native on the northern part of Karnataka (Near Hubli), while coming back to Bangalore We thought of taking the flight and since our little one year old son was with us, the ultimate choice was King Fisher, B’coz it is the first flight for our Little prince, and we wanted to ensure that he is comfortable flying and I believed KF handles that very well, and KF did not disappoint me either. It was too good.

HUBLI- Bangalore: 30/09/2007.
We reached airport at 2/00 pm. Hubli has a small airport (Newly opened), when we alighted from the Car a KF escort approached us with a trolly and helped us in getting our luggage scanned and both the Check-in counters were neat and clean and the Check in exec. welcomed us with a usual smile and handed our boarding cards, and asked us to wait for the Security check call, and also advised us to use the Baby Care centre if needed, for the kid.

The flight IT:2432 was at 3/00 pm and the Air craft from Mumbai arrived 10 mins. ahead of schedule, Boarding call was on time. A KF lady ground staff approached us at the waiting launge and offered assistance in handling our Little Prince for boarding.

The Aircraft was an ATR 70 seater, well maintened, clean and had noice -free propellers. The flying crew were smart and co-operative. One of them came to us soon after we settled in our seats to brief about the precautions with the kid, while take-off and landing, and gave an extra attachment for the Seat Belt and cotton buds, and also offered blanket.

The take-off and landing were as smooth as always on KF, (the little prince did not even feel that)

The food quantity and quality were good, neatly packed, and the hostess came up with an idea of offering the food to us one by one ( A unique yet, appreciable gesture), so first I finished my food and then while I took care of the Prince, my wifey dear was served. During the 1 hr 10 mins. flying time, the hostess came to us at least 4 times just to ensure that we were comfortable and the kid is enjoying the flight. (though we never called them).

We arrived in Bangalore right on time rather 5 mins. ahead at 4/10 pm, once again the trolly was brought to us by KF ground staff and they helped in collecting the baggage from the conveyor, these small things add to the feel good factor in favour of KF.

To sum it up :
Yes, it is a great experience that my son took first flight on the Red Bird , the King of Sky, and as usual King fisher brought us joy at the end of the jouney, with our little Prince smiling and winking at the hostess’ bidding good_bye while disemabarking.
